Catching in Fastpitch Softball is different from baseball because we have to have a quicker throw with less upper body strength. The bases are closer together so the runners don't take as long to get to the base and because men naturally have lots of upper body strength many of them throw off their knees. The majority of catchers in Fastpitch Softball will stand up to throw to second, this takes time and so there is a technique designed specifically to get the catcher up faster then anything else, it is called a flat back. When you combined a flat back with a crow hop getting into throwing position takes less then 1 sec. From throwing position some catchers tend to drop and flip their hand which adds an entire second by itself. A catcher should be bringing their hand straight up and back to prevent a delay in the throw.
